The Star columnist Soo Ewe Jin continues to give back to society even after his passing
PETALING JAYA: Despite having lost his battle with cancer last year, The Star columnist Soo Ewe Jin (pic) will leave behind a legacy in the form of a scholarship for aspiring journalists.
A sum of RM50,000, contributed by friends and supporters during Soo’s wake, will serve as seed funding for the scholarship.
“At the funeral and wake services, Ewe Jin’s supporters and friends gave very generously. We had indicated that the entire collection will go towards a good cause,” said Angeline Lim, Soo’s widow.
With Lim serving as benefactor, the Soo Ewe Jin (SEJ) Scholarship has been set up under the umbrella of the Star Education Fund and the Yayasan Universiti Sains Malaysia.
It will sponsor one undergraduate every year pursuing a Bachelor in Communications (Journalism) degree at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), which is renowned for producing top-notch journalists.
A Trust Deed for setting up the scholarship was signed by Star Media Group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, USM Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Asma Ismail and Lim at Menara Star on Friday.
Soo was The Star’s Executive Editor and best known for his weekly column Sunday Starters, which touched the lives of many with its strong message of compassion, kindness and charity.
