Kuali wins Gold Award for Best Tech Developer
PETALING JAYA: Kuali, a Malaysian food recipe website, has clinched the Gold Award for the “Best Tech Developer” category at the D-Awards 2020, organised annually by the Malaysian Digital Association.
Star Media Group Bhd (SMG) chief marketing officer of product and innovation Lam Swee Kim said the company was honoured to have Kuali recognised for its innovation.
“We aim to continue building Kuali as a product and to bring fun into cooking, through the app’s experience, ” she said in a statement yesterday.
Kuali, owned by SMG since 1998, launched its newly designed app in 2019.
The Kuali app is equipped with an artificial intelligence (AI) image recognition model that can scan and detect up to 102 commonly found local ingredients.
The Optical Character Recognition capability feature picks up characters on a label and provides recommended recipes on the app.
SMG head of food vertical, product and innovation Karen Lim noted that the app reduces people’s fear of cooking by using AI to identify ingredients and match cooking recipes for them.
The Kuali app was also a finalist in the “Best Use of Digital Innovation” category.
The app leverages smartphones’ native capabilities to build its features. Apart from the scan and search feature, Kuali has a “shake and recommend” feature that utilises the phone’s gyroscope to recommend dishes from thousands of its recipes.
