Kuntum reaches out to Orang Asli kids in Banting
Monthly edutainment magazine Kuntum has launched its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme for this year, with the theme “Kuntum Bersamamu”.
This time around, efforts were targeted at the Orang Asli, whereby children from the community received free copies of Kuntum.
Three villages were chosen to receive the magazine, which is published by Star Media Group.
They were Kampung Orang Asli Pulau Kempas, Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Cheeding and Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Kecil, all located in Banting, Selangor.
The CSR programme was initiated last year to provide reading and teaching material to the children of frontliners during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The decision to help Orang Asli children this time was to ensure that they would not be left behind in their studies due to the lack of access to technology and learning material.
With Selangor being under the conditional movement control order, the programme was carefully planned and adhered to all standard operating procedures.
The initiative was sponsored by FNA Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd, which donated Cocoa Trees Chocolate to the Orang Asli children.
As early as 8.30am, the Kuntum crew – carrying 2,350 copies of Kuntum magazine – departed from Menara Star in Petaling Jaya.
Their first destination was Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Cheeding, where 1,000 copies of Kuntum were received by village head Basri Bayet and Bukit Cheeding Community Management Council chairman Bayet Pipis.
Later at Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Kecil, the crew was greeted by council chairman Katon Kecit.
A total of 350 Kuntum magazines were presented to the Orang Asli children there.
Finally, at Kampung Orang Asli Pulau Kempas, another 1,000 copies were presented to village head Raman Pahat.
Raman, who thanked SMG and Kuntum, said it was the first time they had received sponsorship in the form of reading material.
He hoped that the contribution would inculcate the reading habit among the Orang Asli children, thereby uplifting the community and improving their lives in the long run.
