Thank you for 50 years of support
PETALING JAYA: It’s our golden anniversary today, a milestone for any company or person.
We are excited to turn 50, as this marks another step in the long journey of a small, regional newspaper in Penang that gradually evolved into the Star Media Group (SMG) that now has a huge and influential presence across multiple platforms.
When we launched our (almost) year-long birthday celebrations in March this year, we spoke of how news consumption has changed over the years. And this has transformed the media business as well.
But through the years, we have always held dear the basic tenets of journalism, more so as we continue charting our journey through the digital world.
Take a peek at our special interactive story on TheStar.com.my for a behind-the-scenes look at how we reported some of the major and historic events in Malaysia over the years.
While Covid-19 has put a dampener on our celebrations, the pandemic isn’t going to stop us from acknowledging our precious asset: YOU, our readers.
That is why the 50 Days of Giveaways Contest was held as a way to say thank you.
Today is the culmination of the event, which started on July 22.
This means that today is the day that you can win the grand prize of a Mazda2 hatchback in the contest.
To mark this special occasion, there is also a special one-day sale today where readers can get a 50% discount on annual plans for The Star Digital Access, The Star ePaper and eKuntum if the promo code SMG50BDAY is used.

And here’s our birthday wish, or rather, our pledge: SMG will continue to engage our audiences in meaningful ways.
Anyone who has followed us closely would know that we have often held activities that cater to the rakyat.
Our charitable arm, Star Foundation, has carried out many social projects to help vulnerable communities in the country.
For school leavers, we have held education fairs that act as a compass to guide them towards the right career paths.
For homeowners, we have organised home exhibition fairs that served as one-stop centres for building dream homes.
We walked as one in #AnakAnakMalaysia and the ever-familiar Starwalks in Penang and Ipoh.
We galvanised the people on issues that mattered most to them in campaigns like #StandTogether.
This list goes on and on.
With a myriad of services to cater to the needs of everyday people, we will always stay true to our duty of keeping Malaysians informed of issues that impact the country.
We hold fast to our belief that content should be presented on various platforms in a professional and engaging manner, whether it’s in print, on air or online.
This can be seen in the recognition won by SMG over the years such as the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) – Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards, the Society of Publishers in Asia Awards for Editorial Excellence, and the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers’ (Wan-Ifra) Asian Media Awards.
As we toast our 50th birthday, we hope to continue being the first to bring you the news.
We don’t say this often enough, but thank you for your support in making us The People’s Paper.
